Portfolio

Here you’ll find samples of some of my writing and multimedia work. This portfolio includes a mixture of personal, educational, and professional projects.

Instructional Video

This instructional video guides students through MLA formatting in Microsoft Word (desktop edition) in less than five minutes. It was revised as an addition to an online composition textbook. I also made a version of the video for Google Docs users, which can be found here.

Website Copy

All copy and design on Roving Cat’s website is designed by me as a side project to monetize my fiber arts hobby. I used Squarespace’s design tools for the interactivity of the website.

Document Design

This Rhetorical Situation Worksheet is designed for classroom use to help students work on rhetorical analysis and reading rhetorically. Feel free to use it for your own classes!

Lecture Video

An instructional video created for an online-only class, this video guides students through analyzing a multimodal object such as an image with text. This video was created with Microsoft Powerpoint and screen capture software.

Instructional Design

This PDF is designed to introduce learners to the basic terms, history, and concepts of spinning on a drop spindle

Lesson Development

This lesson plan is designed for any instructor to use to teach relationships between genre spaces and rhetorical situations. This lesson is designed for undergraduate level classes and includes two worksheets for students and a complete lesson guide for instructors.

Research Presentation

“Tolkien by Jackson: Power and Prestige” is a research presentation for the 2016 Literature of the Hidden and Fantastic conference that makes a distinction between the concepts of power and prestige in genre systems. This project used data collected for my Ph.D. dissertation, The Power Fantastic. Here is the entire presentation: abstract, paper, and slides.

Informational Video

This video was commissioned by the Brown Chair of Literacy to promote and prepare students for the First Year Composition programs at The University of Arkansas. I did all the editing and design for it in Adobe Creative Suite.

Screenwriting

Ellranna is a fantasy parody meant for a small cast. The story was collaborative; screenplay is my own work.

Short Story

“The Bloody Slipper” is a retelling of the Cinderella story with a bloody twist.

Film

“The Red Wagon” is a short nonfiction film written and produced as an assignment for a class in graduate school. This film shows off some of my multimedia skills, including rudimentary animation.

Short Story

“The Old Rocker” is an improvised short story in response to a prompt from Writing Magic by Patricia Wrede. I wrote this as a demo while working with students.

Comic

Arrogant English Major is a memoir written as an assignment for a class in graduate school; writing and art is my own. Click on the image for the finished product; click here for the script alone.
